THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD PROTECT OUR RIGHTS
It really is the job of government to protect us. It should protect us from invaders. It should protect us from murderers, from thieves, and from fraud in business.
The four basic rights, in order of importance, are Liberty, Life, Property, and Contract.
Liberty needs to be enforced.
The four basic rights need to be enforced by an organization which is (1) watchful to enforce them, and (2) responsive to requests to enforce them.
Criminal law is when the government is watchful to enforce rights. When there is a murderer who is killing people, it is the function of criminal law to catch him and prosecute him, and thereby to protect the Right to Life.
Civil law is when the government is responsive to requests to enforce rights. If someone damages your property, then you can sue him. You file a “complaint”. The court hears the evidence. If the court is persuaded, then it orders restitution. The guilty party is ordered to pay you compensation for the damage which he caused.
Being watchful to enforce rights also includes being alert to what is happening in the world and to potential threats from foreign nations.
This is all as it should be.
The U.S. Declaration of Independence says, “that all men are . . . endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men”.
Thus, according to the U.S. Declaration of Independence, the purpose of government is “to secure these rights”.
The Preamble of the U.S. Constitution says that the purpose of the Constitution is to “. . .,
establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, . . ., and secure the blessings of liberty”.
Again, the purpose of government is to “secure the blessings of liberty”.
THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT GOD
The Great Conspiracy of the Super Rich wants the government to own and control everything, because the Super Rich people control the government.
Communists, Marxists, Leftists, and Socialists all want the government to own and control everything, because according to Communism:
#1. Anything done by businessmen is “exploitation”.
#2. Only the government can be trusted to protect and care for people.
#3. The proper role of government is to completely take care of everybody.
Therefore the Conspiracy and the Left always and everywhere claim that the government needs to “protect” people from whatever alleged threat they are supposedly fighting.
The result of this is super-protection which is in fact tyranny and slavery.
This is a very broad phenomenon. It can be seen in many aspects of society.
The purpose of government is changed from being the protector of Liberty to being the complete caretaker of everyone.
Government is changed, from the definition of the U.S. Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, to the definition of the Communist Manifesto.
“IT’S A DIFFICULT JUDGMENT”
It is true that it requires judgment to decide how far the government should go in “protecting” the public.
The ultimate in super-protection would be to keep everyone in chains in a dungeon. Then everyone would be “safe”. No one could “exploit” anyone else by offering to pay him to do something. No one would be put at risk by people offering health care without government approval.
In the debate over the universal surveillance being done by the National Security Agency, we have seen a very large number of men wearing expensive suits talking about how one needs “judgment” to decide between the right to privacy and the government’s alleged “need to fight terrorism”.
Yes. And one could equally debate the “difficult judgment” as to how many chains are needed to keep everybody safe in the dungeons where we are protecting them.
Liberty is the important thing. In comparison, safety and security are not important.
VARIETIES OF GOVERNMENT PROTECTION
Seat belts. The government “protects us” by making it a crime to drive without a seat belt.
Universal surveillance.
Bombing people in far away places.
Giving government money to people who fail to support themselves.
Protecting black people by denying white people their Liberty.
Protecting homosexuals by denying Christians their Liberty.
Protecting the consumer by making it extremely difficult to start a new business.
Protecting the consumer by outlawing any form of healthcare without government approval.
Protecting the environment by denying people their property rights.
Civil law protects consumers by awarding wildly extravagant punitive damages against any business or any man with property.
The “war on drugs” protects us from drugs by putting drug users in prison.
“Gun control” protects us from crime by outlawing guns.
IF THERE WERE ONLY ONE AREA
If there were only one area where we see the tyranny of government pushing more and more aggressively to tell us what to do and to deny us our choices, then one might possibly suppose that there is an honest disagreement.
But no. Everywhere we look we see the same aggressive government tyranny.
There is a pattern here.
