DOING NOTHING IS JUST GIVING UP
Many people think politicians are just a bunch of crooks anyway. Why bother to vote when there seems to be no reason to think that one candidate is better than another? The phrase “honest politician” is considered a contradiction in terms. Why would an honest man want to get involved in such a sewer of criminality and greed?
Pacifists have an argument. They say, “What if there was a war and no one came?”. The answer is, “What if there was a war and the bad guys came but the good guys didn’t?”. What would happen is the bad guys would win and they wouldn’t even have to fight. What if nobody had stood up to Hitler? We’d be in real trouble.
If politics is a sewer of criminality and greed, the same argument applies. If good men stay away because “Politicians are all crooks!”, who is going to clean it up? The crooks are going to do their worst, and nobody will be there to stop them or even to tell the world about it.
People think that politics doesn’t make any difference. Nothing ever changes. But think again and look at history. Things get better because good men work hard to make them better. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and the other Founding Fathers worked very hard at great risk to create the new nation America. Things get worse because bad men work hard to make them worse. Hitler and Stalin worked very hard and caused millions to suffer and die.
WHAT IS POLITICS ABOUT?
People think that politics has nothing to do with them. It happens someplace far away and does not affect their lives. That is not true. The three great issues in politics are Liberty, War, and Finance. Each of these is a matter of vital importance to you. What you do, or what you don’t do, does make a difference. The crooks in government definitely do not want you to pay any attention, and do not want you to do anything about it.
LIBERTY
In America at this time Constitutional Rights are collapsing. The government spies on everybody. You can’t fly without being searched and X-rayed. The police routinely plant evidence, and the courts let them do what they please. Maybe this is not a problem to you – until they come for you. Maybe you should try to do something about it before they come for you. Liberty is what made America great. If America loses its Liberty, then America is no longer great, and one can no longer be proud to be an American.
WAR
Do you think wars cannot touch us in America? Do you think everybody in the world loves us? Do you remember the “cold war” and the “arms race”? The arms race is over, but that’s because it takes two to make a race, and America is not racing. The Russians and the Chinese are still hard at work building up their war machines. America is going to war in lots of small places around the world. But with respect to strategic weapons, with respect to a really big war with our biggest potential enemies, America is actually disarming. America is becoming more and more vulnerable to a new World War.
One nuclear bomb can ruin your whole day! The Russians and the Chinese are working hard to get ready to attack America. Eventually, they will believe that they can attack and win. When the Russians and the Chinese finally feel ready, do you think that they are just going to sit there and do nothing? Are you willing to bet your life on it? If they are not planning to do anything, why are they working so hard to get ready? When the bad day finally comes, are you going to claim that you are an innocent victim? Are you going to say, “Nobody told me!”? Well, here and now, you are being told. This is something you need to pay attention to.
FINANCE
Many politicians find politics a profitable business. But if they were just pocketing a few million, that would be a very small issue. Far more important is what they are doing to the finances of the nation. They give their friends fat government contracts worth millions or even billions. They promise more welfare and more benefits to everybody. They spend government money without limit. Do you really believe that the government has an infinite amount of money? Have you looked at a chart recently showing the government deficit or the national debt? Would you buy stock in a company that managed its finances this way? What do you think these graphs of the deficit and the national debt tell us about the future of America?
WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT?
We have left the crooks alone in government to do their dirty work without restraint for too long. They are destroying Liberty, creating War, and bringing Financial Ruin upon us. So we really should do something about it.
The first thing to know is that it is a big problem, not a little problem. Some slight adjustment in business as usual is not going to remedy things.
The second thing to know is that they are lying to you. Vast political and financial resources are being used to deceive you and to persuade you that black is white and up is down. So how do you know what to believe? You have to figure that out too.
The first thing you need to do is to educate yourself. You need to know a great deal more about what is going on in the world, who is doing what to whom, and how it all works.
The second thing you need to do is to educate others. Some people say that you should not talk about it unless you can say what can be done about it. But in this situation, you cannot do anything by yourself. So it is necessary that a great many people should learn and know what’s going on in the world. So telling others about it is in fact doing something about it. If you are in a village somewhere, and barbarians are about to attack, and you are the only one who knows about it, the first thing you need to do is to sound the alarm. You don’t go off and prepare to do battle by yourself.
The situation is very bad. But so far, we can still talk about it, and read and write about it. The internet is a wonderful medium of communication which we have but which did not exist in earlier ages. We are still allowed to communicate over the internet. This may not last for long. But for now, we still have important liberties. We must act vigorously before we lose them. Your help is important. Your help is needed.
